Autism Awards

Camphill Rudolf Steiner Schools in association with the Grampian SVQ Accredited Centre offer two nationally recognised Certificates for people working with Autism:

PDA - Managing the Support of Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders
PDA - Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders
 
Grampian SVQ Accredited Centre and Camphill Rudolf Steiner Schools have developed a training course to meet the needs of those working with clients with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Camphill with its accreditation by the National Autistic Society combined with Grampian SVQ Accredited Centre’s approvals by the Scottish Qualifications Authority make ideal associates in the delivery of this course. The training is (optionally) followed by assessment against the National Standards of the Professional Development Awards in either: Managing the Support of Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders or Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
 
Course Facilitators
Bernhard Menzinger
– MSc in Autism and a qualification in Curative Education. He has over 25 years experience in working with people with Autism. Bernhard delivers the taught component on Autism Spectrum Disorders and is an Assessor of the Higher National Units.
Dorothy Miles CSS – Dorothy has over 30 years experience in the Care Sector and is a qualified Assessor, Internal and External Verifier for the Scottish Qualifications Authority. She delivers the taught component on Care Standards inc. Legislation. Dorothy also assesses and verifies both Higher National and Workplace Assessed Units.

Award Structure (applies to both Awards)
  • The units within the awards provide learning suitable as ‘stand alone’ units for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) purposes.
  • There are 4 Units. Three of these are Mandatory with one Optional Unit to be chosen.
  • 2 of these are Higher National and 2 are Workbased Units.
  • The taught element of the course takes 2 days. (plus a further half day seminar for those wishing Unit only or  whole Award Certification).
  • It is possible to attend the taught part of the course only  (if you do not wish Unit only or Full Award certification).
  • Some participants may already hold one or both of the Workbased Units (these Units exist at SVQ levels 3 and 4). 

People involved with identification, diagnosis, assessment and support of people with ASD include:

  • Workers in residential and day care settings.
  • Social workers and assistants.
  • Workers in adult mental health services.
  • Domiciliary/home care workers.
  • Family workers and community workers of all types.
  • All workers in the health sectors.
  • Workers with children and adults in educational establishments.
  • Therapists (speech, language, occupational, behavioural etc.).
  • Counselling service workers.
  • Advocates.
  • Day to day carers, parents and families.
The specific aims are to assist or enable participants to:
· demonstrate an understanding of the nature of ASD, the triad of impairments, the effects of ASD on the lives and behaviour of individuals with ASD, their families and carers,
· develop skills appropriate for working with a range of individuals with ASD including children, young people, adults, parents, carers, family members of  those with ASD,
· develop a working knowledge of current legislation, National Care Standards and SSSC Codes of Practice, policy, procedures and practice methods when working with individuals with ASD,
· integrate values, skills and knowledge effectively  and in an anti-discriminatory way when working with individuals with ASD,
· critically evaluate their practice and to be reflective practitioners and engage in continuing professional development.
